Causal Agent:

Crinivirus (Cucurbit Yellow Stunt Disorder Virus - CYSDV)

Characteristic Symptoms:

The virus induces interveinal yellow spots in mature leaves of melon.

The yellow spots enlarge and may eventually coalesce, resulting in the yellowing of the entire leaf except for the veins which remain green.

Infected  leaves will sometimes roll up and become brittle.

Conditions for Disease Development

The virus is transmitted from plant to plant by the whitefly vector, Bemisia tabaci.

Management and Control:

Use resistant varieties, if available.

Remove weeds that serve as alternate hosts.

Increase water and fertilizer application.

Control whitefly population by using plastic mulch, insect traps and/or use of insecticides such as imidacloprid (e.g. Solomon®, Confidor®, Admire®, Provado Supra®), dimethoate (e.g. Perfekthion®), metamidophos (e.g. Matador®) and cartap hydrochloride (e.g. Padan®, Dimo®, Vegetox®).
